In the short story, “The Oval Portrait” by Edgar Allen Poe, the author uses many examples of gothic literature. Some examples being from the setting of the story, which is a decaying settlement that the narrator and Pedro are forced to go to. For example, the text states, “To all appearance it had been temporarily and very late abandoned. Its decorations were rich, yet tattered and antique.” (Poe 1).
