On the third day of rain, the power had gone out. The light at noon was so weak that it was hard for Pablo to see what it was that was moving and groaning inside his dwelling. He had to go very close to see that it was an old man, lying face down on his couch, covered in bones. It was January 31, 1999, Super Bowl Sunday. A haggard man in pitiful condition was sitting on Elaine and Pablo’s couch. His state of being drenched in spicy sauce and stripped chicken wing bones took away any sense of grandeur he might have had. They dared speak to him, and he answered in an incomprehensible dialect, football slang. They skipped over all the inconvenience of the bare wings and wrappers he left, and quite Intelligently concluded that he was a lonely castaway from his old neighborhood …show more content…
Pablo watched over him all afternoon from the kitchen, armed with his bailiff’s club. Before going to bed he dragged the man off of his couch full of garbage and bare wings, and left him inside of his own guest dwelling. The next morning, they opened the door so that they could take a close look at that pitiful man who looked more like a decrepit fan than an authentic football player, which he claimed to be. He was laying in the corner soaking his wings in the sriracha sauce while laying among leftovers from the previous game night. The man said nothing to Pablo except that he played in the NFL and came for Pablo’s famous chicken wings and television. Unaware of his impertinences, in the morning he lifted his antiquarian eyes and saw Elaine and Pablo with the local football expert,who knew everything about life, death, and of course football, standing in the doorway. The expert had his first suspicion of an imposter when he saw that the old man did not understand the language of his sport. Nothing about him measured up to the proud dignity of the NFL. Soon the news spread and football fans of all ages gathered in Pablo’s
