Pack the Bus, a new project I spearheaded, was created to educate the community about food insecurity while collecting food for those people in need. I started a campaign in my community to bring attention to those food insecure children living around us. I orchestrated a meeting where students created poems about food insecurity and we displayed them where students could read about their work. Beyond the school, I walked door-to-door and to various local businesses and asked for monetary donations, in total my collection raised over $580 and 1.5 tons of food. Our culminating event, “Pack the Bus”, consisted of putting our collections on a school bus and riding it to the South Jersey Food Bank. There was further awareness with local officials attending the event and front page coverage on the South Jersey Times. This year I guided an underclassman to continue the legacy of Pack the Bus. This council is comprised of 73 high school students from 32 schools across the area. My duties as a council member consisted of cooking meals for the families at the house and selling tickets for the Spare Some Love (SSL) bowling event. Through numerous sponsorships and fundraising SSL, we raised over $28,000! Inspiring me to get more involved, SSL was the turning point where I decided that I wanted to run for the TAC Executive Council. I was awarded the position of Student Director (President) of the TAC. It is now my duty to organize meeting agendas and coordinate meetings between the council and families living at the house. Engaging the council members to cook meals and participate in activities with children in the house. As well as volunteering, the executive council brings in professionals from businesses in the area.
