Paging Nurse Betty

Throughout my life, I have met hundreds of people. However, only a special few have had the ability to make an impact that lasts a lifetime. There is one woman in particular that has influenced my life and helped make me become what I am today. She was there to lend a hand when I needed it most. This woman that greatly impacted my life is Betty Garth. I meet Betty Garth in the six grade after a band concert. She wasn’t a student, but a parent of a friend. She welcomed me with open arms treated me as her own. Betty has made a tremendous impact in my life by her numerous acts of kindness, generosity, and most of all, my mentor. She taught me all the basic essentials in life; essentials such as honesty and integrity which have carried with me throughout my life so far, and will be with me in my future as well. This woman influenced my young life immensely, and steered my life in the right direction. She has made an impact on my life by teaching me the values and ideas that hold special to us as human beings. She trained me to understand and create my own personal values; personal values which develop from situations and affairs with the outside world. And from this I was able to construct my own individual values and gained the ability to know when to apply these values. The years I have known her have been the finest years of my life thus far.
Betty’s kindness is infectious. I often suspect she does random act of kindness to even the most stubborn people to show them that it’s not a terrible thing to be nice to others no matter what the circumstances are. Since she works in the hospital field she often comes across people that are going through some rough patches where even just a smile can help brighten someone’s day. I remember last spring when I lived with her she would leave messages on my bathroom mirror. One is particular time I remember it said, “If you're reading this... Congratulations, you're alive. If that's not something to smile about, then I don't know what is.” Needless to say I smiled.
Betty has a habit of doing things for others without expecting anything in return. She may not have the money Bill Gates does, but she is certainly generous with commitment to others. She has volunteered in the past to meals on wheels, Kiwanis, and soup kitchens for the hungry. One time I remembered she made a poster for a parade supporting firemen and thanking them for all that they do. Another form of generosity is how she has helped me so many times. She has let me lived with her while trying to better myself by focusing on schoolwork. She has given money towards my schooling and even helped me get hired at her job. She has bought me clothes and food. She has taken care of me like her own child and I look to her as a mother figure in my life.
Most importantly I look up to Betty as my mentor. Betty graduated as a nurse from AB Tech in 198?. From the first time I met Betty she has always given medical advice as to taking care of your health. She always made everyone wash their hands; cover their coughs, and everything you can think of
