Habitat: Painted turtles are usually found in quiet, slow moving and shallow bodies of water such as ponds, streams, rivers, and marshes. They can be found in 8 Canadian provinces, 45 States of the USA, and in one state of Mexico. It is the only turtle whose native range extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. They usually live near fresh water with soft bottoms, basking sites, and aquatic vegetation, as they need these things to thrive.

Niche (role): Painted turtles eat both plants and animals, making it an omnivore. They mostly feed on plants and aquatic life, such as fish and crustaceans. Painted turtles are the most common turtle found in North America.

Habitat: Screech owls are usually found inside trees in most types of woods (evergreen, deciduous, etc.). They are also usually located in particular near a source of fresh water. In urban areas, they can be found wherever trees are located. The range at which the screech owl can be found at extends across North America, but cannot be found at elevations above 1500 meters.

Niche (role): Screech owls are primary carnivores, and they have a greatly varied diet. They are known to eat birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, terrestrial non-insect arthropods, and terrestrial worms. Screech owls are hunted by hawks, larger owls, and other screech owls as adults; and raccoons, ringtails, and rattlesnakes as eggs or nestlings. However, they bring live animals into their nests in order to protect themselves against other parasites that may infest it (i.e. ants and flies). These animals help the owls get rid of pests in the ecosystem while also staying protected and gaining a food
