Magical Realism in Pan’s Labyrinth
Ofelia is a young girl in what seems to be the late 1940’s, during a War in Spain. Ofelia traveled with her mother Carmen who is pregnant with Ophelia's brother to Spain to meet and live with her new father which is the commanding captain in his regiment. Ofelia is very doubtful about the big move to live with the captain at his fort but seems to be ok about living with this new man because of the love she has for her mother.as her stay progresses she learns that her new father, Captain Vidal is a inhumane man with no regard for life other than his unborn son’s that will continue on his legacy. In the middle of the second night, Ofelia comes across a bug that has been following her all since she got to the fort. After asking if the bug is a fairy, the bug transforms into a small human like creature with wings. The fairy then took her to the center of the maze in a dark pit, in the pit she meets an old creature that explains to Ofelia that she is a lost princess of a magical kingdom where there is no suffering, no death or pain. she is also informed that her “real” parents are waiting for her but she needs to complete three tough tasks filled with danger first to make sure her pureness is still intact and to make sure she is still immortal so she can still live in the magical kingdom with none of the thing that the human world has to offer.
