In the first episode of the series, the inner desires mentioned were happiness and satisfaction. In this episode, however, the main focus was the fear. Fear is one of the strongest emotion of human beings, and government and businesses have been taking advantage of this extreme emotion to control the society and sell their products.
After World War II, psychoanalysts used the technique developed by Signmund Freud to take soldiers into their childhood memories, which were repressed by the fear during combat. It was hard for me to believe that the soldiers who fought bravely in the war could become that vulnerable when they talked about their old memories. Therefore, this part of the video made me realize the inner self of a human being is very fragile and easy to reveal itself.
The fear of human beings is strong, yet fragile. In the documentary, I saw not only the fear that was hidden during the war, but also the fear of being left out from the society in peace. The experiment by Anna Freud on the children of her close friend—Dorothy Burlingham was an example of the effect of fear on children at an early age. Deodorant and toothpaste advertisement often use this strategy to target the fear of being left out because of bad hygiene. In the documentary, the products of Betty Crocker also alleviated the guilt of using convenient food, simply by including in the instruction: “add an egg.” It seemed really simple, but “adding an egg” created the feeling of participating, therefore encouraging the housewives to overcome their guilt and buy Betty Crocker’s products.
