Papillon is very cunning in his ways and it is this ability which saves him in almost every tight situation. When stuck in jail with no other obvious way out, what does he do? Papillon imitates the likes of someone who would be insane so he is sent to the Asylum. Great! Now he is on the edge of the group of islands and if he escapes but then is found, they would direct the cause to him being insane. He is also now well cared for medically and nutritiously.

Papillon is indeed someone who contains an iron-strong will. Throughout the story, Papillon faces the imbalances of life as he is put into unfair situations. Foremost, he is clumsily sentenced to a life of hard labor. Then, upon his first escape where freedom was at his fingertips, he was cut off when he was sighted aiding other cons in their escape. Though as he is faced with all of this, he still pushes through knowing in the end he will find freedom, even if the cost has no limit. His perseverance shows even more as he is put into solitary confinement, where millions go insane or dead. But nonetheless, is able to come out in a reasonable condition.

By that, I mean being able to not only stay physically fit, but being able to take care of your body and giving it what it needs. During Papillon’s journey to escape, he walks for hours on end in steps of 5. This gives him much needed recreation and a way to track time. As he is then put into solitary confinement, where there is minimal food, he asks his friends on the outside to sneak in coconuts with his meals as coconuts provide a good source of nutrients, protein, liquids, and can be put in the sun to turn into coconut
