A paradox is a phrase that essentially contradicts itself. For example, saying "that's a small crowd." The words "small" and "crowd" contradict each other because they do not generally go together. This example could also be considered an oxymoron.

An overstatement is a phrase that exaggerates for emphasis. An example of this would be someone saying "I am going to die" when the merely have a cold.

On the other hand, an understatement is a phrase that makes something appear less than it truly is. For example, if someone were to get shot in the chest and they reply by saying "It is just a flesh wound."

Dramatic irony is when the audience is aware of something that the characters in a play or movie do not know. For example, in Disney's "Mulan," the title character dresses like a man in order to go to war. However, when she arrives, all of the men around her assumes that she is in fact a man. Since the audience is shown the story from Mulan's point of view, they are aware that she is actually a woman, which is something other characters are not aware of, thus this is dramatic irony.

Irony of situation occurs when someone's actions result in something different than what was originally intended. In order to give an example, a scenario between John and Julie will be described. John and Julie are friends; John is attracted to Julie, and one day Julie asked John why she could not seem to find the right guy for her. To give some background, Julie had just broken up with her third boyfriend this year. Believing this to be his moment to ask her out, John started to describe the perfect guy for her, and, unbeknownst to Julie, John was describing himself. John said "He is smart, funny, a little awkward, and mildly attractive if you try to ignore
