I interviewed Ms. Bellamy a special education behavioral paraprofessional at Lyman Hall Elementary. In order to be qualified for this position here are some of the ways that you can qualify you must have an associate degree or finish two years of college. Either an Associate of Art or an Associate of Science degree is accepted. If you have not earned a degree, you can still become a paraprofessional if you have earned at least 60 college credits. You can also contact your local board of education for all the requirements. For the past two years, Ms. Bellamy has been a special education behavioral paraprofessional. During those years Ms. Bellamy has learned about the different treatments and intervention techniques used for the various disorders among children.
Through hands-on activities at work, various workshops, seminars and me through her own research, she has acquired knowledge about the different disabilities. Ms. Bellamy works with children that have ASD (autism spectrum disorder), AD/HD (attention deficit/hyperactive disorder, Fragile X (also known as Martin-Bell syndrome), Severe Autism, Bipolar, Asperger syndrome, Dyspraxia, Tourette's syndrome and Emotional Behavior Disorder (EBD). Bellamy may consist of running around the classroom after the children. If the children act out all day and sometimes this will lead to her and the other paraprofessional in the classroom to not being able to teach the students. Bellamy said that there are days when it is particularly challenging to help a student complete a task, but these challenges are usually overcome by meeting with the team and following specific suggestions. Ms. Bellamy said her greatest joy is seeing a child accomplish a goal or exceed a goal that was set for them.
