A study of national prevalence of exposure to parental inmate partner violence among adolescents estimated that 9% of US adolescents have been exposed to parental intimate violence. Adolescents exposed to intimate parental violence resulting in immediate and physical danger resulted in 40-60% of adolescents facing long-term problems such as: emotional, behavioral, academic social problems and, post-traumatic stress. Children exposed to violence
(either child abuse, domestic violence, or both) had higher levels of externalizing and internalizing behavior problems in adolescence than those exposed to neither form of violence.
They found that abused witnesses were 187% more likely to have internalizing problems than those in a no-violence control
