The situation surrounding the Parthenon sculptures and where their true home should be is a he said she said kind of situation. The British Museum believe that the pieces are all rightfully there’s. They believe this because Lord Elgin stated that he got two different forms stating he was allowed by Greece’s to take whatever artifacts he and his group wanted. Fast forward many years. The Greek government now want the pieces back and say that Lord Elgin had no right to take away the Parthenon sculptures. Now the art world is stuck in a tug of war on who should have ownership of the Parthenon sculptures. I for one believe the sculptures are okay where they are at. When the sculptures first were taken, Lord Elgin was given permission in the form of a firearm by Athen’s government. Greece’s current government now want the pieces back. The sculptures are housed in the British museum where they are heavily guarded, while still being shown to the public. No harm has ever been done to them while on British soil. Even during the bombing of England in WW2, the British government made sure that the sculptures were placed in a safe location deep underground. However, if the sculptures were to be sent back to Greece they would be put in danger. Greece’s economic system is currently in a disarray, causing riots and a general instability. It would not take much convincing for a citizen who is down on their luck to try and steal the pieces to sell. Also, the supposed museum where the pieces would go is not that secure. Compared to the British Museum, security is less advanced, guards are few in numbers, and the piece’s new home is not completely protected.
