Should Participation Be Rewarded?

In today’s society, young children get rewarded for things just for participating. Some people say that this is bad on the children. Although, others think that participation awards could do more good than harm for them. There are many reasons both for, and against children receiving participation awards for everything. In my opinion, children should be able to receive participation awards.

One reason that it could be a good thing for a child to receive a participation award it because it may make them feel accomplished. In some cases, children join an activity or sport just because of their love for that activity. With that being said, they are there to play, not necessarily to win. Because they may not be there to win, receiving a participation award could really help their esteem. That award could make them feel accomplished and maybe even proud

As a child, those awards may be the only thing they got. They may not have been ‘as good’ as everyone else. Therefore, having those awards and seeing them years later may give them some sense of pride or joy. As said in the prompt, a group of young men were showing off their trophies they had received as kids. They were nothing big, but they were kept by the men and greatly valued by them as well.

However, there are also a few reasons as to why participation trophies may be bad for a child. One reason it could do more harm than good is the attitude it may give them later in life. Some may argue that giving a child a participation trophy every time they are in an activity shows them no ‘work ethic.’ If you teach kids at a young age that they don't have to work hard to receive awards, then they may have that same attitude later in life.
