Hello students of MP. Stanley Kubrick, an excellent screenwriter, cinematographer, photographer created the classic anti-war film starring Kirk Douglas called, Paths of Glory (1957). It was set during World War 1, where the protagonist Colonel Dax is ordered by General Paul to lead his regiment to capture the German trench, “Ant Hill.” General Paul knows deep down that this war would most likely end into a disaster but he would do just anything for his promotion. General Paul is not happy with the results, many died within seconds but many also stayed behind in fear. The final scene was completely opposite from the entire movie but it perfectly ends the movie with a happy ending the audience would have never expected. Kubrick captured an excellent movie about the abusive power of the upper class and the complete innocence of the soldiers. The moral of the movie conveyed that the enemy is closer to us than we think it is. The enemy is ourselves.
This is probably the only black and white film I enjoyed and I usually never watch black and white films. Kubrick had the choice to film in color but he chose black and white and that was a brilliant idea. The movie wouldn’t be the same if it was in color. The black and white made each moment in the movie very dramatic since it was filmed during war time. Kubrick turned this movie into a great cinematic experience for the audience, What if the film was in color?
Paths of Glory took 7 years to create with amazing action shots and great techniques used by Stanley Kubrick. I highly recommend this movie to not everyone but anybody who enjoys anti war films. Kubrick has changed my perspective on black and white films. His use of the features was
