Introduction The purpose of this assignment is to provide a brief summary and evaluation of a “speak Up” brochure from the joint Commission concerning the national patient safety goals. For this framework, I chose the brochure title “Five things you can do to prevent infection”, published on November 11, 2012. I was interested because it provides simple and easy precaution that healthcare provider can follow to prevent contamination and increase patient safety.

For example in the second thing to do to prevent infection, authors encourage patient to ask their care provider if they have cleaned their hands. In number fourth thing to do to prevent infection, authors also encouraged patients to communicate with their healthcare provider to know if there is anything they can do to prevent infecting people in the waiting room during their visit. In the fifth thing to do to prevent infection, authors also encouraged communication between patient and health care provider about the vaccination they may need to prevent diseases.
Evaluation
The brochure was presented in the basic comprehensive level, with simple grammar and picture illustration, and in separated short sequences to make it easy to read and to understand. Even non English speaker can quickly understand the process through picture. However the brochure focuses solely on hygiene prevention and didn’t make any mention for other preventive method such as exercise and nutrition that are also important for disease prevention.
