“I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know no way of judging of the future but by the past.” (Henry 102) Henry was one that knew what he wanted when he wanted it. At this time period of the 1700s, the people had the desire to fight at all costs for their freedom from Britain. They also had some fears, the colonists feared that they could not achieve the things that they wanted. They needed a little push more to voice their voice and fight for what they wanted. Which was their independence. That some of their struggles were that they able to find religious freedom, get away from poverty, and persecution. He explains to the colonists that when they make and form a military they will conquer. In this part of the speech, “No man thinks more highly that I do of the patriotism as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House.” He is showing a form of ethos. This quote is effective because it’ll mean that men are going to do what they can at all costs. The quote was effective also because he makes it clear that he wants to go and gain independence. He explains that he would do anything he can to help and make a military. “For my own part I consider it as nothing else than a question of freedom of slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate.” (Henry102). He is willing once again to do anything in his will power possible. He is able to talk to the colonists and knows how to grab their attention.
