Philip Malloy a ninth grader at Harrison high school was suspended for being patriotic. Philip Malloy was suspended patriotism because he was singing the “ The Star Spangled Banner.” But he was never singing the national anthem he was actually humming it, and Superintendent Seymour said it himself, “We do not have such a rule,”(53) So therefore he could sing if he wanted to. We are going to prove that Philip Malloy, an innocent boy, was suspended for being patriotic. In Mrs.Rooney's class she offered Philip to lead them to sing the National Anthem and Philip then while he sobbed said, “I don't know the words.” (97) This proves that he was never singing the National Anthem if he didn't know the words because u can not know the lyrics to a song and still be humming it because of the tune. Philip himself even said several time that he wasn't trying to be disrespectful and Miss.Narwin said that he was trying be a disturbance and get attention but he wasn't.
