Tray
Small container for loose objects
Two sets of objects or pictures: one set is fixed (e.g. items are adhered to a surface) and one set is not fixed (e.g. objects will be found in small container)
Design Control:
One fixed set/card
Familiar objects to child
Objects in pattern are distinct/different
Loose objects closely resemble or are exact matches to objects on fixed card
Exact number of loose objects to match the fixed card (control card)
Control of Error:
Visual- seeing that the patterns between sets match
Auditory- hearing that the patterns match
Aims:
Direct-
To support the sensitive period of language
To support the sensitive period of small objects

To recreate the fixed pattern with loose objects

Age: 2½ - 6 years
Presentation:
Invite child to shelf to gather materials for the patterning lesson.
Direct child to go to rug source and choose an area of the floor to unroll the rug for the lesson work.
Sit on child’s dominant side to present the lesson.
Place fixed card (control card) in top left hand corner of rug.
Place unfixed card directly below the fixed card.
Place empty tray in top right hand corner.
Remove loose objects from small container and place objects in randomized pile in lower right corner.
Identify first object from fixed card (control card) as an apple and tell child “I am looking for an apple.”
Find apple from loose objects pile and place apple on unfixed card in far left position, matching the position of the first apple on the fixed card; repeat the word apple to child while pointing to matching object on the fixed and unfixed card.
Repeat step 9 with the next object (peach) from the fixed card pattern.
Continue to repeat step 9 with remaining objects from the fixed card pattern.
After pattern is complete and the unfixed card pattern matches the fixed card pattern, start with the fixed card to identify the
