In the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a young boy, Santiago is on a journey to achieve his personal legend. Along the way, he is stopped by others, who change his life for the better. He has met a crystal merchant, who tells the boy of his take on personal legends, Fatima, his love, and the alchemist, a mystical man who Santiago wants to become one day. These three people help Santiago in achieving his personal legend, by teaching him, motivating him, and supplying him with valuables.
While Santiago is on his journey, he stumbles upon the Crystal Merchant. He hires the boy to help business and to get more money. To Santiago, it was just another job, but little did he know, the Merchant will show him the most important lesson in his life.

This beautiful place has more than meets the eye. When Santiago is walking around, he sees the love of his life, Fatima. The boy tells her how much he loves her, and she walks away. Later that day, she finds him, and agrees with how much he loves her, and she loves him. A week later, Santiago must leave the Oasis and Fatima. Fatima stops him and says, "[m]y father went away one day, but he returned to my mother, and he has always come back since then" (Coelho 126) Fatima says this to motivate the boy to fulfill his legend and come back to her, because she will always be waiting.
Santiago has been influenced by many people, but one in particular has been influencing him even before they met. The Alchemist, a man who is a user of mystic tools and a speaker of the Omens. The Alchemist teaches Santiago to speak with the Omens and different lessons to achieve his personal legend. As the boy was about to leave to fulfill his legend, the Alchemist pulled out the philosophers stone, and turned lead into gold. "This is for you...mak[ing] up for what you gave to the general" (Coelho 160). The alchemist gave a piece of gold to Santiago to supply him for when he is
