The nursing occupation is often understood as a women profession. People believe that men do not belong in a profession that is “feminine”. This statement is deceptive and prejudice. Nursing is not the only profession in which there is gender discrimination, which also involves the gender pay gap. The only difference between nursing and other professions is that nursing is dominated by women, and men are the minority. Because they are a minority, one would think that they would get paid less. But this is not true. The average salary per year is nearly $61,000 for a male nurse, and just $51,100 for a female nurse. It takes the same education qualifications for a male and female nurse, therefore their pay should be the same. As a nursing student, I have an interest in the gender pay gap there is between male nurses and female nurses, and my current perspective on this issue is that everyone should get paid equally for doing the same job.
Nurses have many important tasks that they must do. Both male and female nurses are required to do the same work. Nurses work in the hospitals taking care of sick people to help them get better. For nurse anesthetists, which have the biggest pay gap, is about $17,300. The smallest pay gap is nearly $4,000 which is for middle-management nurses (Diamond, 2014). Possible reasons for the pay gap are that some female nurses may have to leave the work force due to being pregnant. This can cause them to return to work with a lower pay than their male coworkers who continues to work while they were gone. Also, male nurses may be better at negotiating pay raises.
