Building a Multi-Project Battalion by Leading Upward Leadership is a very necessary and significant part of project management. A strong leader efficient with the concept and understanding of what it takes to lead others is necessary for appointment as the head of a project in order for a project to conclude with success. The realization of leadership significance in project management is made aware in the case study, “A Peaceful Evacuation: Building a Multi-Project Battalion by Leading Upward”. In the case study, the leadership and strategy of Lieutenant Colonels Yaron and Daniel are the focal points during the disengagement and evacuation of Israeli settlement central in the Palestinian populations near the Gaza Strip. Both commanding officers had varying leadership styles that were not the simplest in nature and were proven advantages for the process. In this correspondence a comparison and contrast of the leadership styles of both Lieutenant Colonels during the evacuation process will be made. Opposing approaches to leadership during the processes of a project, military type included affects the advancement of the project and has some impact on how it is managed ultimately. Describe The Leadership Style Lieutenant Colonel Yaron’s leadership style can be considered transformational and you find it is recognized throughout much of the case study. A transformational type style of leadership is dependent in part on effective and complete communication between members of management. This is necessary to obtain and reach the goals designated for the project. You find with this style of leadership, leaders absolutely motivate their team members. They boost the productivity of the project and the team members, through efficient and effective communication and a high degree of visibility on everyone’s efforts. Leaders, who lead with this style, place emphasis on the whole mission of an organization and delegate smaller tasks to the team. This is one way to determine the goals details are accomplished. A relative precise example of this style is when Yaron encouraged, “the battalion’s company commanders to initiate ongoing meetings with their soldiers” (Laufer et al., 2012, p.157). This is a reflection of Lt. Col. Yaron’s transformational leadership style. He was of the belief that this evacuation process was kind of a personal deal which requiring that soldiers should interact with upper level managers in order to get more acquainted with the project. Other fragments of evidence highlight the method of Lt. Col. Yaron’s preferred style of leadership, which is evidenced when Yaron made request of an immediate meeting with a Brigadier general. Lt. Col. Yaron communicated that if the team members did not show dedication, personal involvement, or commitment toward the mission being undertaken by the commanders of the dispatching unit, the mission had no chance of success. (Laufer et al., 2012). The second distinction evidenced was seen in Yaron’s expression when the Brigadier General gave Lt. Col. his personal cell phone number after a meeting giving permission to call any time. Yaron’s expression implied that he had the feeling of receiving at last, “direct open communication” between the higher management and lower subordinates (Laufer et al., 2012). Analyze The Leadership Style Lieutenant Colonel Daniel embraced a leadership style quite different than that of Lt. Col. Yaron at the time of the evacuation process. The difference could be for any number of reasons to include the understanding that different people see things differently. Lt. Col.
