As the founding fathers created the structure of the United States government, the main concern was to not allow a single entity to rule all the people. They understood that if the government is not kept in check, there would be anarchy. The responsibility lies on the people to secure this representative democracy.
As the great Martin Luther king Jr said, “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws”. As the people of this nation, there is a moral obligation to stand against the governments unjust actions. As the stance of this essay is very clear, peaceful resistance to unjust laws is a crucial component of the American identity.
As defined by the Hoover Institute, a free society “is a rule of law based on fundamental moral truths that are easily understood and fairly and effectively administered. It offers individuals and families equal opportunity to better their lives morally, spiritually, intellectually, and economically.” When laws and executive actions deny these fundamental rights, society must come together and stand against such actions. If the founding fathers and the people of the thirteen colonies hadn’t resisted the rule of an unjust king, the United States of America would have never formed. The rule of King George III did not allow for key freedoms to be granted to the people whilst setting heavy taxes on them. As history has shown, the people went against the king and declared independence.
There are countless other examples within American history that have taught the benefits of peaceful resistance. During the Civil Rights era, African Americans have spoken against segregations and the cruelty towards the African American population. People marched with Martin Luther King Jr peacefully while facing hate and violence against them.
