Peaceful resistance to unjust laws positively impacts a free society. As stated by Nick Gier in his essay "Three Principles of Civil Disobedience: Thoreau, Gandhi, and King," there are three main principles of peaceful resistance. The first principles entails that those that are going against unjust laws must remain respectful of the laws that are just in society. For example, if a group was protesting the lack of rights for LGBTQIA people in American society, that group would respect police officers and, if anyone in the group were to get arrested, that person would go peacefully. The second principle of peaceful resistance is the notion that if a person is arrested for violating current law, he or she should always plead guilty to the charges. The …show more content…
During an NFL game at the Bank of America Stadium, around a hundred people gathered to peacefully protest the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott and the current lack of justice surrounding unlawful police shooting of unarmed victims that have been haunting America for years. This is just one example of the many protests going on in America alone. Another example of people peacefully fighting hate with love, the third principal of peaceful resistance, happened during the funerals for victims of the Orlando shooting at the nightclub, Pulse. The Westboro Baptist Church, a group known for its hate of the LGBTQIA community, showed up to the funerals and held signs that spewed hate on a day of mourning for so many people. In order to block out the WBC hate, a group of volunteers dressed up as "angels" in order to block the hateful signs from the people mourning at the funerals of the forty-nine victims of the shooting. These angels used white sheets suspended from their shoulders to act as wings to block the protesters from the grieving families. The WBC's act of blatant hate was respectfully replaced with love and understanding for the Orlando victims and their
