In the novel Peak, Roland Smith does a great job describing the characters and how they either evolve or stay the same. Zopa is a retired sherpa, who is very mysterious and cagey. Zopa is a static character because he stays very mysterious, keeping mostly to himself. In the novel, the author states, “If he agrees to do something, he’ll do it, but he may not be doing it for the reason you think he’s doing it. And he’ll never let you in on why he’s doing it” (Smith 49). Zopa remains the same throughout the novel, not always doing something for the reason you think he is doing it. The quote above from page 49 was a piece of foreshadowing in the novel, because later on in the story, you figure out the main reason he agreed to help Peak climb the mountain. …show more content…
‘How old are you?’ ‘I’m fourteen years old,’ he answered. I think we had just gotten to the main reason Zopa had agreed to leave the Indrayani temple and take me to Base Camp” (Smith 130). Peak and the others figured out why Zopa had actually agreed to take Peak to base camp. Zopa was keeping this information about being Sun-jo’s grandfather all to himself, until the secret was spilled by Holly Angelo, a reporter that had come to interview Peak on his journey up the mountain. Later on in the novel, Zopa gets sick, and so he cannot make it to the summit. He asks Peak to help Sun-jo get to the summit, and Peak does, but Peak decides to go back down the north side of the mountain and break the plan. On his way down the mountain, he gets a note from Zopa that was addressed to him, and this freaked him out. The author states, “I was glad to hear he was okay, but the note freaked me out. It was addressed to me! The plan had been for me to top the mountain with Sun-jo and cross into Nepal. How could Zopa have possibly known what I was planning to do? I didn’t even know what I was planning to do until I was ten feet away from the summit!” (Smith
