Peasant Girl Painting Analysis

I chose to look further into the category of children. I found a painting by Zinaida Serebriakova called “Peasant Girl. Detail.” that was painting in 1905 with tempera and watercolor on paper. Its dimensions are 62.5 x 34.9 cm. http://www.abcgallery.com/S/serebriakova/serebriakova4.html I chose this painting because it seems to be very natural and raw. The artist does not focus so much on beauty and color and really seems to paint exactly what it is she is seeing. At the same time it is very detailed. Serebriakova includes the girl’s mole on her face, the creases in her eyelids, as well as in her headscarf, and even makes the girl seem to just be exhausted. I believe it is showing how tired this young girl is. Maybe she had a long day working trying to earn money for her family or is in charge of running a household because she has no mother. Bouguereau’s paintings were considered to be fantasy. While he may have had children actually model for him, he did not make them accurate for the time period and often times made them mythological. I think this is why his paintings appealed to people who never experienced anything like they saw in his paintings. They, too, were living the fantasy. His technique was flawless and precise. Cassatt on the other hand, is more realistic. She paints children accurately to her time period and doing things children would do. Her technique is different than Bouguereau’s in that she is much looser in her strokes and such.

Comparing “Peasant Girl. Detail” to the works of Bouguereau and Cassatt, I would have to say her work is more like Cassatt. She is depicting a real girl it does not look like some sort of fantasy to me. I feel as though her technique is quite loose, too, like
