Peer pressure is a idea that does not always have a good side to it. In Kindred by Octavia E. Butler and the Scholastic article Peer Pressure: Its Influence on Teens and Decision Making, they both have some sort of driving force or peer pressure that causes characters to make bad decisions or take bad actions. Anyone can be peer pressured weather it is by other people or the setting you are in. While peer pressure can be a bad thing, there can be good that comes out of it. Overall, peer pressure is portrayed in the book Kindred and the article Peer Pressure: Its Influence on Teens and Decision Making and it can be portrayed in several ways. One common way of peer pressure is from the people around you or you see very often. In Kindred, Dana is pressured by many curious people to lie in order to hide who she really was. For example, “‘Where are you from?’ asked the woman suddenly. ‘The way you talk, you not from ‘round here.’ The new subject caught me by surprise and I almost said Los Angeles ‘New York,’” (Butler 40) This shows how Dana was pressured by other characters question to lie because she had to give an answer immediately and she did not want to seem suspicious to others. The protagonist in the book and article is usually peer pressured to take certain actions either by the people around them or the environment they are in. Also, peer pressure is not always a bad thing because sometimes, good can come out of it.
