A) The most memorable thing Kathy said was to leave work each day at a place that you’ll be eager to continue. I think that this is very true and inspiring. Despite all the interesting techniques she used with After Effects and her later work (including the performances), my favorite was her hand drawn animation especially the “Pencil Booklings” because the way she interacted with her characters was very unique. Additionally, all her characters had such interesting personalities. I felt like her later works that were screened and the performance were all similar and could be one piece. Since I am from that culture, buddy figures and Japanese ghost is a weird combination. It was fascinating to see how her life experiences were incorporated into her work such as when I can hear some music similar to African dance music in her work. I thought the use of Theremin excited me and reminded me of when I went to visit CalArts and saw their interactive music department because Kathy also graduated from CalArts. I enjoyed the transitions between the puppet’s world and her world where she included her body because the juxtaposition made this dream-like environment more relatable. I also thought that her use of motifs were compelling. I agreed with her that thunder is a good motif for our ability to control our fear because she in controlling when she wants to use the thunder sound and thunder is usually associated with fear. The most visually compelling part was when there were lights shining at plants in a very dark room, so only some parts of the real plants were exposed at a time.
