I am an average reader, probably much like you. I will read every so often, maybe a couple of hours a week. However, when I picked up "Pennies for Hitler" by Jackie French I couldn't put it down. So, it didn’t take long before I found myself captivated by the story of a young boy caught up in the horrors of World War 2. “Pennies for Hitler” by Jackie French explores the reality of racism against Jews at the time and the courage and bravery that they needed to demonstrate to survive. This novel has allowed me to escape the world I live in today and visit a heartbreaking story of a young boy in a racist community, changing my outlook on life and values. It was 1939, and a regular school boy named Georg was living in Germany. It wasn't until a university graduation turned into a horrific Nazi demonstration that Georg needed to be smuggled into an extremely war-torn England, then across enemy seas to Australia. Even though only Georg’s grandfather was Jewish, the Nazi’s took no mercy in killing his dad and hunting down Georg as well. This has made me realise how privileged I am to live in Australia where people are more accepting of your race and background, giving everyone equal opportunities.
