Penny byrne
Penny Byrne is a well-known Australian contemporary ceramicist, she is a Sydney based artist, and was born in 1965. Byrne completed a bachelor of laws at La Trobe University in Melbourne, in 1997. She originally began her career as a ceramics conservator and restorer, this Is due to her mother owning a ceramic s store, and being introduced to the artistic world at an early age. Her artworks are politically charged and she references worldly issues as well as popular culture. She does this through satire and playful humour, however her message is clear to the viewer and carries a dark warning of what is to come if humanity doesn’t make changes. She uses materials such as glass, vintage porcelain figurines, bronze and found objects to produce her artworks. Byrne often uses brushes to create intricate details on her figures to give them a better sense of character and to allow them to essential come to life with a realistic nature. She takes these old figures and restructures their appearance and meaning, so that they are no longer pretty, familiar objects which you rest on your mantle for decoration they now have a deeper meaning. Her use of these delicate/ homely figurines is in contrast to the subjects she is representing. She does this through use various artistic styles, methods and elements. Byrne uses a classic style with a wide range of colours which make her work appealing to the eye as well as eye catching. The desired result of her work is to make the viewer question these controversial subjects which include war, global warning, unnecessary death and or violence and civil rights.
