According to Pulham, after a break of nearly two months, Bittaker and Norris found their suitable target on September 2, 1979. This time, instead of one victim, the men spotted two teenagers hitchhiking. Fifteen-year-old Jacqueline Gilliam and thirteen-year-old Leah Lamp were hitchhiking along the Pacific Coast Highway, heading towards Redondo Beach, when they decided to take a break and sit down. Bittaker and Norris offered the two teenagers a ride and they voluntarily entered the van. Bittaker, the teenage girls were raped and tortured with wire coat hangers and pliers over the course of two days, with Bittaker and Norris also taking photographs (clothed, nude, and during rapes) and audio recordings of the two teenage girls. The court in People v. Bittaker added that that the two men were more sexually interested in Gilliam as opposed to Lamp because Gilliam was a virgin. Therefore, the men gave Lamp a strong sedative which rendered her unconscious, making Gilliam the main target of the men’s rape and torture. When it was time for the teenagers to die, Norris told Bittaker that they should kill Gilliam first and kill her fast because she was “helpful” to them. Accordingly, Bittaker jammed an ice pick through Gilliam’s ear and into her brain. Immediately afterwards, Bittaker choked Gilliam to death. Because Bittaker left the ice pick logged in Gilliam’s skull, he instead started choking Lamp, who was already under the influence of sedatives and did not fight back. While Bittaker was choking Lamp, Norris took a sledge hammer and started hitting Lamp over the head until she died.
