The series, American Crime Story: People vs O.J. Simpson highlights racial tension between the African American Community and the Los Angeles Police Department. O.J. Simpson is an African American man who was tried for the Murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman. O.J. was found innocent in his criminal case, however, he was tried again in a civil lawsuit and found guilty of both deaths. This series takes us through the journey of Simpsons battle with the court. The trial lasted for 11 months, and was confined into four seasons of television. Simpson's lawyer, Johnnie Cochran led the jurors to believe that there was reasonable doubt concerning the evidence used against his client. This is the main reason why O.J. was found innocent in the criminal trial; he had to be innocent or else the black community would react, much like the Rodney King incident. Racial profiling is when an officer uses race or ethnicity “as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense”. Race based policing is when officers target minorities for committing crimes. Simpson's dream team of lawyers were able to convince the jurors that O.J. was targeted for the murders merely due to the color of his skin. Since this was shortly after the Rodney King incident, the African American community quickly took his side, backing O.J. and his innocence. My understanding of racism involved in our court system and policing system changed. Citizens use their emotions to dictate decisions. Although the prosecution had an overwhelming amount of evidence, Simpsons persona won the emotions of the people, which is why he was found innocent in his criminal trial. Simpson is a dramatic, yet, factual based series that shows why O.J. was found innocent at first (due to race,) but later found guilty (in a civil trial). This was due to a lower standard of accountability in a civil trial. Also, there is typically a monetary punishment rather than jail time in a civil trial. The series tied O.J.’s outcome in his court case to fear and violence. After watching the entire series, I feel as if O.J. was treated too nicely. Although O.J was found innocent in his criminal case, he was not prosecuted correctly. This was all due to fear within the
