From 1620 to 1640 twenty thousand English left England to search for new land in New England. This was called “the great migration” since numerous groups of people relocated to new land. The English community felt strongly about religious traditions, so their goal was to make a religious community called the puritans. One of the neighboring Indian tribe, the Pequod was the most powerful tribe at the time. The Pequod controlled trade and expansion, along with the fertile land for farming. Since the Puritans used farming as an important part of their community, they were basically envious of the fertile lands the Pequod possessed.

The Puritans took a bold decision to sail ships out towards the Pequod fort at Mystic, where one third of the Pequod lived. The Puritans struck at night making women, men, and children vulnerable. Heavy resistance caused the puritan leader, John Mason, to rethink his plan of attack. John Mason knew the resistance would make it so not everyone would be killed, so he ordered his people to set the entire community on fire and retreat to the walls built by the Puritans. Anyone who tried to escape from the fire were either killed immediately by the puritans guarding the wall, or if they got over they were killed by other Indian tribes. The attack took one hour, killing a third of the Pequod people. Others attempted to help, but they were all unsuccessful and arrived too late. On May 26, 1637 English and Indian allies attacked Mystic Connecticut massacring the Pequod community. This forever changed relationships with colonists, and set a forum for taking of India
