Intro: The world is seen differently by each person. Our perception is the way we see and interpret things around us. The process of perception is in the way we attach meaning to our experiences. We do this through selection, organization, interpretation, and negotiation. First we select which information we will notice, and not notice. Then we organize that information in a meaningful way. Next we interpret the information, and finally we negotiate to try and achieve a shared perspective.
The Dick Van Dyke Show is about a married couple Rob, and Laura who get into a fight. They have each had a hard day, and they end up fighting. This eventually leads to Rob walking out. The rest of the show features Rob and Laura each telling their side of

In The Dick Van Dyke Show Rob and Laura don't understand each other because they don't have access to the information that the other person has experienced in the time that they have been apart. When he first gets home Rob doesn't know that Ritchie has been difficult all day. This information would probably change the way that he treats Laura because he would see how she is feeling at the time. Another influence on perception is health, and fatigue; factors such as sickness, and tiredness. “These kinds of changes have a strong impact on how you relate to others.”(Adler, and Procter 89) Rob said he thought he was getting a cold sore. Everyone sees the world differently because they select, organize, interpret, and negotiate differently. In (the Dick Van Dyke Show) Perception is shown through Rob, and Laura’s fight. They show elements of perception that create the environment in which they argue. Influences on perception cause them to view things differently. Common tendencies of perception make them exaggerate the story when re-telling it. They do not use perception checking. This helps cause the argument because they make assumptions, and don’t correct them. empathy, and cognitive complexity are used to show different points of view.
