For Summer Reading, I read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Riordan was born on June 5, 1964 in San Antonio, Texas. He wrote the Alma Mater for The University of Texas. He originally wanted to be a guitarist, but then changed his mind and became a novelist. Riordan was inspired to write this series because he would tell bedtime stories to his son, Haley, who, soon after, was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and Dyslexia. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief takes place in the 21st century. The Greek Gods are a reference from the past that they wanted to incorporate. He is the son of Poseidon. After he defeats a Minotaur, he gets sent to a camp called Camp Half- Blood. While there, he goes on a quest to retrieve Zeus's lightning bolt from Hades. Once he gets to The Underworld, he finds out that Hades didn’t steal it and his helm of darkness is gone. In the end, it turns out Luke stole the lightning bolt and helm of darkness. Percy also decides to go home so he could go to 7th grade. The setting of the book is New York and more specifically, Camp Half- Blood. The location is very important because they go around the city to do different things. The message of the story is that it takes few times to find your identity. He always thought of himself as the kid who always go in trouble, but in the end, he was the kid who saved the day. This book was compelling, especially when the author brought Medusa into the story. This novel’s theme is like life because Percy is finding his identity and it is very important to find yours. In life, without finding your identity, you are a nobody. I would definitely recommend this book to my family. When you start reading it, you really can’t stop. This book is very addicting and that’s what I love about it. I learned from this book to cherish
