Sports and Drugs As we all know, there are many amazing athletes in the sports world today. With many skilled athletes the pressure to prepare and perform well has become increasingly harder. As an athlete, I know how important it is to prepare yourself for each and every performance, but some people go to the extreme. To prepare themselves and guarantee that they will perform well many athletes will result to performance enhancement drugs, or PED’s. Living in a pill-popping, tummy tucking society, people believe it is acceptable to use medication to better a healthy body. Improperly consuming harsh supplements have fatal consequences that our athletes are not aware of. Drugs like steroids and other forms of doping have a negative effect on long term health. Because these supplements are not pharmaceutical controlled, they have become overrated and abused. After taking these supplements over a long period of time your body begins to rely and crave on these drugs. Players are convinced that PED’s are helping their fame and fortune, but in reality, they are abusing their strong, healthy bodies. The overuse of these drugs has become common in the sports world. A player consuming PED’s is not only risking their health; they are risking their future opportunities. If a high school athlete was caught practicing the use of illegal drugs any scholarships awarded to them for athletics would be destroyed and their chance of making it into the big leagues would be ruined. If a professional athlete is established using they can be fined, sued, suspended, and depending on the seriousness of the violation, a player’s contact can be dropped. A successful athlete is someone who is dedicated, works hard, and is committed to sacrifice for the love of the game. PED’s destroy the meaning of the game and elegance of the sport. There is more to being a top athlete than performing and being successful. A valuable player sets a good example, becomes a role model, follows the rules, and makes a change. Every professional athlete influences the younger generation and impacts their life. Many fans have a lower respect for those who use and cheat. Using drugs only hurts ones reputation and slowly wrecks their body. As Thomas H. Murray, President of the Hastings Center said “The drug race in sport has potential to create slow motion public health catastrophe. Finally, we lose whatever is most graceful, beautiful, and admirable about sport”, and he couldn’t have said it any
