In the play “A Raisin In theSun”, it tells the story of an African- American family, The Youngers,who are a poor and living on the South Side of Chicago. An opportunity to escape from poverty comes in the form of a $10,000 life insurance check that the head of the family (Mama) receives upon her husband's death. Her children, Walter and Beneatha, each have their plans for the money. The oldest son, Walter,wants to invest in a liquor store. The younger sister, Beneatha, a college student, wants to use the money for medical school.Throughout the play, everyone expresses how they wish to spend the money and show the problems that come with them. The body and gesture in this play was very well used and the individual choices that were made by the character helped to add more 'depth' to the emotions. One specific choice that worked was in the scene where Ruth, Walter, and Beneather were conversating with Mr.Lindner and just by looking at Beneatha's facial expression and body movement, you could tell Beneatha was really upset about Mr. Lindner coming and trying to keep the family from moving into the house that Mama purchased, even though she wasn't talking. She had her arms crossed and her face showed that she was somewhat annoyed or angry. The costumes, props, and set in the play communicated to the audience that it was set in the past like somewhere between the 50s and 60s.
