In greek mythology, Persephone is the reason for seasons as she is the goddess of spring growth. Her name also stands for “to destroy” and “murder” in the context of harvesting. She was born to Demeter, goddess of agriculture, and to Zeus, god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods. Persephone was often even considered an Olympian. In Roman mythology, Persephone was known as Proserpina. During her childhood she was called Kore, which stands for maiden. As she was young, she attracted the attention of many gods due to her beauty. One of the gods who were attracted to Persephone was Hades, God of the Underworld. Hades talked to his brother Zeus about how to trap Persephone and kidnap her to be his bride in the Underworld. Eventually, they created and followed through with the plan and Persephone was taken to be his bride.

Persephone learned overtime to love Hades, but she still always longed to be on Earth with her mother whenever she was in the Underworld. She really set her place in Greek Mythology with her myth of being kidnapped by Hades with the help of her father, to be Hades’s bride in the Underworld. In spite of being taken into the Underworld, Persephone’s kidnapping created seasons. In anger and sadness, her mother, Demeter would refuse to produce fruit on Earth until Persephone would return to Earth, which created winter. Then when she would return to her mother on Earth they would begin harvesting as Persephone was the goddess of spring growth and harvest. While she was in the Underworld, she brought much light and energy as she was a very radiant person in such a gloomy dark place.
