The Iranian Government, during the Cultural Revolution, made it mandatory for all females to wear a veil, which caused uproar and protests in Iran. Throughout Persepolis, Marjane, also known as Marji, illustrates a modern picture of Iran before and after the Cultural Revolution. Before the Revolution, Iran was a very modern country with western cultures. Marji shows us through the graphics that not everyone wears veils, instead jeans and other western clothing items. All this takes a turn when Reza Shah gets overthrown by Ayatollah, which causes the start of the Cultural Revolution. During this time, Ayatollah made it mandatory that all women wore veils to cover up their hair. Many Iranians did not like the change, like Marji’s family, so
