The Iranian Government, during the Cultural Revolution, made it mandatory for all females to wear a veil, which caused uproar and protests in Iran. Throughout Persepolis, Marjane, also known as Marji, illustrates a modern picture of Iran before and after the Cultural Revolution. Before the Revolution, Iran was a very modern country with western cultures. Marji shows us through the graphics that not everyone wears veils, instead jeans and other western clothing items. All this takes a turn when Reza Shah gets overthrown by Ayatollah, which causes the start of the Cultural Revolution.
