Everyone has some kind of ethical code they follow; whether it be personal, religious, or professional. Right now, I have a personal code that I follow; but in the future I will have a professional one as well. A code of ethics in psychology may have many principles, but it is put in place for one specific reason; which to protect clients. The ethical code is like a guideline to keeping a client safe. This is why they are of the utmost importance. They make sure that clients have informed consent, have privacy and are protected from any kind of harm.
Ever since I was younger I knew I wanted to help people. At first I wanted to be a lawyer, and then I realized that what I want. I want to be able to make a major impact on someone’s life. I want to be the person that helps them discover their true potential. I am very interested in abnormal psychology, subconscious mind and behavioral issues. I would like to become a clinical psychologist for children. I think that if I can help solve a mental or behavioral issue in a child, it might help them before it becomes a bigger problem in adulthood. The ethical guidelines for harm are fairly simple, they state that there should be no harm done to clients and to protect them from any harm” (ACA, 2014). As a counselor the number one priority is the client. Counselors should always want to keep their client out of harm’s way. “The code also states that Counselors are aware of—and avoid imposing—their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors” (ACA, 2014).
