Personal Essay: A Career At Persephone Theatre

Drama has defined my most successful moments which resulted in gratifying personal achievement. When I was in the fourth grade I began taking various classes at Persephone Theatre during the school year and in the summer. I enjoyed the new atmosphere that I was previously unaccustomed to, and continued to take classes through Persephone’s youth programs. In the fifth grade, I auditioned in Saskatoon and area (ie: The Barnyard Playhouse, Persephone Theatre, etc.) for various plays, and although I never got the specific roles I auditioned for, I was able to begin networking at a young age. The following year I did Junior Company again, however with new instructors meant new objectives; this was the year that we performed the classic play ‘Little Women,' where I was the main character Jo March. In addition, this was also the year that I worked one-on-one alongside the full-time lighting and sound technicians at Persephone in order to make our production a success. I learned never to underestimate the characteristics of a production that are often times overlooked. In the ninth grade (and tenth grade), I helped out with the lighting, sound, hair, and makeup with Bishop James Mahoney’s annual school production. Also, in the ninth grade I was given the opportunity to complete an acting camp in Los Angeles through CGTV. The camp was designed by previous Disney channel stars and provided an intensive hands on two week insight into the Hollywood business. At the end of the two weeks, we performed a sketch in front of 20-30 agents and managers in hopes of getting a call-back from one of them. This opportunity helped me score an agent/manager through TN management in Toronto the following summer.
