Personal Experience: Freshman Mentor In High School

One of the experiences that I have that I think prepares me for the RA role is being a freshman mentor in high school. I was tasked with helping four incoming freshman transition from middle school into high school. I did this by providing advice on how to study for subjects that may be difficult, giving directions to navigate the school, checking in on my freshman once a week to see how things are going, and creating events for them to participate in. While I was a freshman mentor, I learned that I can help people by using my own experiences as an example. This way they can real advice based on personal experiences, and it gives me a way to relate and connect with whomever I am talking to. As a Lifeguard, I am charged with the safety of everyone inside of my pool area. To do this I have to enforce rules (even if my friends are the ones breaking them), create reports based on incidents that occur while I am on duty and/or present for an accident. I believe that this experience prepared me for the RA role because it conditioned me to distinguish the line that separates friends and work, as well as put that idea to the test.
