“Catch-22” is a dark humor, war story that suits around the character Yossarian. The dysfunctional military shows sets of themes about how the author, Joseph Heller, looks about war, and his disapproval of it. Personal integrity runs throughout “Catch-22,” and it is central to understanding the main character, Yossarian. He is faced with Hypocrisy, Greed, Power and Isolation that all the characters face. “Catch-22” presents a struggle between an individual, Yossarian, and the terrible effects of war.
Understanding Yossarian is a bigger challenge then the book. To understand him, you would need to know the definition of personal integrity and how Yossarian applies to it. Milo would sell all the important equipment’s to buy useless things. For example: selling the parachutes that the men need to buy statues. Milo is a brilliant but corrupt entrepreneur who manipulates his position into personal direction of a syndicate that controls the black market. Cathcart and Peckem are greedy for power. Cathcart would keep on raising the amount of missions so that his men can keep flying and not go home. Greed leads both Cathcart and Peckem into corruption. Cathcart is responsible for the deaths of men who have properly served their time and should be going home. Milo contracts with the Germans to bomb his own squadron's base on Pianosa. Milo's pilots spare the landing strip and mess hall so they can land and enjoy a hot meal before retiring. As Milo likes to say, "What's so terrible about that?"
