Personal Narrative: A Career As A Surgical Technologist

Step 1: A current issue concerning my core program that is in the news is rather or not surgical technologists should be required to be certified to work in the field. My view point on this issue is that I agree with those that say in order to practice as a surgical tech you should have to have completed a technical program and have passed the national certification test.

Step 2: Surgical Technologists complete many tasks in the operating room. Things ranging from stocking the room to retracting skin and handling many instruments. The job is highly stressful most of the time and requires a lot of level headiness and preparation before each procedure. The need for surgical technologists is said to continue to increase as baby boomers enter retirement and need more medical care. By not requiring certification it allows those that want to be surgical techs to do so without having to go through the educational training process. This profession is said to be able to be learned on the job. Those opposing my viewpoints think that the job is simple and only requires basic learning of instruments to be successful. Those that are against my viewpoint include many hospitals and facilities in the United States that do not require any certification to practice.

Step 5: My two premises on this topic are that requiring certification for the surgical technologist is safer and more efficient for the patient and the surgeon. Also, the only person in the operating room that is not required by all fifty states to be certified is the surgical technologist. My conclusion on this topic is that all fifty states should require that surgical technologists be certified to work in the
