Personal Narrative: A Career As A Veterinarian

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved being around animals and I knew I wanted to do something with my life that helped animals. As a kid whenever I had to visit people with my parents, I was always excited to go if they had a pet. I would even remember the pet’s name over the person’s name. I also liked going to the veterinarian with my pet. I enjoyed looking at and reading all the posters about pet care and health as well as watching the veterinarian help our pets feel better. As a kid our family’s veterinarian was named Dr. Grimm and he always took the time to explain what he was doing and how it would help our pets. Before this assignment I knew this was a job that involved a lot of hard work and that the pay was not the greatest. Although this career has its downsides, I know that the opportunity to be a positive force in the lives of animals and helping them to heal and stay healthy is rewarding enough to make the downside not matter. What I want out of a career is to do something I find personally fulfilling and for me that involves helping animals. One thing I learned that I had not really thought about is how much interacting with people was involved in this job. Although I had figured dealing with owners would be part of it, this turned out to be a much larger part than I had expected. Even though I am not much of a people person, I think I can handle this because I have had customer service related jobs before and I cannot imagine this being any worse. I do think I would also enjoy working in a zoo or a rescue and rehabilitation center as well because working with wild animals also interests me. After writing this assignment I am even more excited to finish my degree and start my career path as a veterinary
