Personal Narrative: A Career As An Anesthesiologist

What I Know About Anesthesiologists I first heard about anesthesiologists when I was much younger. I was around eight years old, and was asking my mom what type of doctor my grandpa was. When she said anesthesiologist, I was very perplexed and had no clue of what he did at work. It was later elucidated to me by my mom that an anesthesiologist administers anesthesia to a patient during surgery or other medical procedures to prevent pain and discomfort. I also learned that in some cases, they put the patient in an unconscious state, or “knock them out”.
Over time, I have collected small fragments of information about what an anesthesiologist does at work. I learned that the anesthesiologist must be in the operating room the entire procedure to tend to the patient, and they must wear certain clothes in the operating room. I also found out that the anesthesiologist must use more or less anesthesia depending on the patient. If the patient uses certain drugs or medications, it can affect how much anesthetic they would need for the operation. How stressful can the job be? Why would someone want this career? Is there further training after medical school they had to go through, and is it difficult to find a job in the field? I would also like for an actual anesthesiologist to clear up misconceptions about their job, and explain some of the things they do when not treating a patient during an operation. Also, how much does the anesthesiologist interact with the actual patient other than administering the anesthetic? I believe all of these questions are crucial to my research because they shed some light on what an actual anesthesiologist does at work, and the reason why they chose the career to begin
