Personal Narrative: A Career In High School

In my four years of high school I have participated in four years of cross country running and two years each of indoor and outdoor track. I have run long distance in all of these sports. Running in high school has allowed me to develop better time management skills and a realistic affective goal setting process. Running long distance also demands discipline and perseverance and has helped me to apply these qualities to my academic and personal goals. The members of sports teams that I have been on have given me a chance to practice leadership in my later years, and a supportive environment throughout my high school years.

Participating in any high school sport takes up a huge amount of time, even in the off season. In the summer, I kept running logs and trained for the upcoming cross country season. During the sports season, I had practice five days a week and meets on saturdays. It was difficult at first managing the increased workload that came with the higher level courses that I took in high school when I had running six days a week. I struggled with time management and procrastination in the beginning of high school because of this but eventually learned that I would have to focus completely on what I wanted to accomplish if I was to succeed in my academic and athletic life.

Running helped me to focus on my goals and plan for the future. Because it’s results are so concrete, running gives excellent feedback and helps participants to improve their goal setting process. Learning how to set specific goals in my athletic career helped me to set goals for my future. Striving to run faster or run a longer distance helped me to strive to succeed in other areas of my life. This summer I achieved my goal of running my first half marathon and I now plan to major in biology and pursue a career in
