In the beginning, I was only in the army because my father sent me to West Point in 1839. Although I may not have recognized it at first, being a soldier became a way of life for me and led me to a life of leadership as a general in the Civil War and eventually as president of the United States. In 1854, I resigned from the army because of my excessive drinking and searched for a new life. I attempted many different paths but I was not successful in any of them. I tried working as a farmer, an engineer, and even a store clerk. In 1861, I re-enlisted in the army and was surprised when I was appointed as colonel of the Illinois Volunteers.
