Personal Narrative: A New Place To Move

The Majority of Military families stay here and don’t have to move around to unique bases across the world, but for some like Dylan King, moving is not something that is irregular. Dylan is a Derby High School sophomore. He has been going to Derby schools for four years. His father is active duty Air Force. Dylan’s dad has to relocate about every three years to a completely new place, taking his family with him. Some kids growing up say moving is hard for them. For a lot of them it’s hard making new friends in new places across the world. Dylan is the opposite. He says “I enjoy moving! It is an interesting way to meet new people and see new places.” There are many like Dylan, that live on, or near McConnell. The bulk of students who live on base are schooled in the Derby School district. Families that decided not to live on base often choose to live in Derby because they are able to be with other Military Families just like them. He has been to five different states and seven foreign countries. Dylan was seven years old when he first had to move. Dylan says “It wasn’t hard for me. I was actually excited to see a new place.” Of all the places Dylan has been to, Germany was his favorite because there is so much history there. “It was just such a pretty place.” Although Dylan went to a English speaking school, he still learned enough of the language to order a meal. “The thing I like most about moving, other than seeing new places, is seeing new people! I’ve noticed that every place I have moved to, does things differently, especially in Europe. The people in Germany are usually the nicest people you’ll ever meet, but the foods they eat are very different from us. The way they eat them is kind of strange too.
