Personal Narrative: A Young Mexican American Woman

As a young Mexican American woman, I know what a struggle it is to try to overcome the male-dominated cultural values that we are raised with but I am excited about the future and our part in it. Luckily, I have been able to break through the mold by obtaining a college education at Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles, California where sixty percent of the student population is Hispanic. I felt at home because the majority of the students had a similar background to mine. Personally, I come from a low income household, and did not have the best educational opportunites. I want to be a Senator so that I can I change the way that laws are written regarding women’s issues. It is important to have a female voice and opinion when writing laws that are going to concern women issues, such as, abortion or birth control, to name a few. As a young child, I have always been attracted to classic television shows, such as, I Love Lucy and All in the Family. From watching these type of shows I realized that what it is to be a woman has changed. Women are no longer complacent and accepting or just being a housewife because we are capable of so much more that just being a wife and mom. And, I know that I do not want the rights that women have fought for so many years to be repealed by the judicial system. Therefore, I think that it is important to educate young Hispanic woman such as myself, about the law. The law is a constantly evolving story that changes throughout time. And it is important for young woman to have a voice and I want to be that voice that is fighting for women’s rights in Congress and the courts. I want to be someone that others can look up to. I want to be the voice for young woman and protect other women, no matter from what
