Personal Narrative: All-White Baptist Church

Over thanksgiving break, I went to a church in my hometown. It is an all-white Baptist church in Walhalla, South Carolina. The church is Golden Corner and I had a lot of mixed feelings about this church. Golden Corner church is a well know church in our town. This church has helped so many people in the community that the mayor rewarded the church with its own day. They do not just focus on the community, but they do mission trips twice a year in Eleuthera. They have built a school, a church, and they have church service there. There is a family from Eleuthera that comes and visit every year. So a part of me feels like this church is not trying to exclude people from other races on purpose. The church is held in the local high school because their previous building is too small. When you walk in the door the people greeting are so friendly and they make you feel like family. I come from a church where they have a small choir and a piano. It is nothing extravagant. I was taken by surprised because this church had four singers and they all had to have their own microphone which I think is uncalled for. There was a huge projector, drum set, three guitars, a piano, and a keyboard. I personally feel like having that much just to sing and worship the lord is too much. Also it is no longer hymnals, but it feel like an unnecessary rock concert. Before the sermon was started the pastor told a lot of jokes about one of the other pastors which was funny, but weird. To me it like the church was gloating on how successful they are and how they connect to the younger generation. It seemed like every time someone talked they were bragging on how they are better than other church. Personally, the church should not be about numbers, but about teaching about God and bringing others closer to
